My phone rang at 11:11 p.m.
The number was strange. It had too many digits and did not match any country code I recognized. I almost ignored it, but something made me answer.
There was static at first.
Then I heard my own voice.
Not a recording I remembered making. Not an echo. It sounded like me, but tired and far away.
The voice said, “Do not go tomorrow.”
Then the call ended.
I tried calling back, but the number was invalid. I searched it online and found nothing.
The next day, I was supposed to drive two hours to visit a friend. I felt stupid, but I canceled.
Later that afternoon, there was a serious accident on the same road I would have taken.
Maybe it was coincidence. Maybe the call had nothing to do with it.
But I still have the screenshot of that number. Every time I look at it, I wonder who was really calling me.
